Because we work and travel a bit, it was really important for me to thwart potential Porch Pirate activity in our absence. With the prominence of e-commerce, and the relative ease of home delivery offered, it's become an uninviting, nefarious opportunity for some people. Well, I'm not having any part of that past-time, if I can help it.

My solution was to construct a Lockable Package Delivery Box to place on the front stoop. I located a prefabricated one on Amazon for less than $100. Jackpot! It was a Cosco Outdoor Living Guard Box, lockable delivery and storage box.

I read the reviews and knew instantly that I was going to have to reinforce and enhance the durability of the box. So, I made a mental list of additional materials I needed to have on hand during construction. For example, screws, silicone, pavers and few other essentials.

I ordered the box online. The product arrived in a large flatpack with instructions.

Sorry Porch Pirates if I squashed an opportunity.

The Project

  1. Read the instructions.

  2. Lay out the parts, ensuring that all parts are accounted for.

  3. Start snapping pieces together.

  4. Reinforce sides with screws.

  5. Waterproof the seams with silicone.

  6. Add locking pins to the end of the hinge pins to keep them from falling out.

  7. Place the box where you want it.

  8. Place a metal grate in the bottom and lay 2 pavers on top to weigh it down.

  9. Use a black permanent marker to go over the "Deliveries" base plate.

  10. Attach a delivery sign on the top of the lid with Velcro.

  11. Attach an open lock on the hinge. (Keep the key inside) Add a note to courier to "Please Lock" after placing items inside.

saving grace. Now we don't worry about deliveries. We get delivery notifications via text. Once we get home, we grab the key and retrieve our packages from the secured box. Love the size. Nice clean lines. Doesn't look out of place.

We love it!!!!
