I instantly knew that the original ugly balloon awning on the front of the building had to go! After removing the awning, power washing, repairing stucco, and painting, I zoned in on the front facade, which needed a new architectural element to balance and capture the industrial style I was after. (A conventional house awing, just would not do.) I envisioned a structure over the stoop, made of metal, with clean lines, and painted black.
Try as I might, the search for the elusive architectural piece was a year-long hunt. Metal Fabricators weren't responsive. The big box home improvement centers, nor Wayfair offered anything unique. Pinterest however, allowed me to envision a plethora of swoon-worthy possibilities via its image sharing. I was in heaven!
Once I settled on a look, I then started searching for reusable building supplies. I lucked upon a pre-demolition company featured on Facebook Marketplace called Before U Demo. I found and purchased an aluminum Commercial Awning for $50! For another $50 they were willing to deliver it to my home. Oh, happy day!
Now comes the "elbow grease".
Steps:
I dunned protective clothing, i.e., painter's coveralls, gloves, hat, glasses, gloves and a mask.
Brushed off the frame with a broom to remove the dirt.
Removed any remnants of tattered material with pliers.
Lightly sanded down any rough spots.
Hosed down the frame, scrubbed with soapy water, then rinsed.
Let air dry.
Masked off a spray paint area with large plastic drop cloths.
Applied coats of Rust Oleum Black Matte paint, allowing to dry completely between coats.

Now for the pièce de résistance! I had to locate a contractor that was experienced in putting up an awning. One would think that this would be simple. Not! I quickly found out that the job was considered too small and a waste of time, or they weren't experienced in dealing with stucco. After a lengthy search, I found a great craftsman that was a home builder. Boy was I lucky! Thanks Mr. A.!
Word to the Wise: Before you start a project, make sure that you thoroughly research tradesmen you might need in advance, especially with an adaptive reuse structure.
Tip #1: Don't discard old t-shirts or kitchen towels. They are great for painting projects.
Tip #2: When painting make sure you have all the right materials and tools to protect. surfaces and your health. Make sure to work in a well-ventilated area. Remember that paint won't adhere if it's too cold or wet outside. (Read product recommendations.) Avoid windy days, direct sun and high temperatures when painting outside.
Reflection: This project was the crowning glory of my exterior update. I love it so much!
PS: I had the contractor cut the flagpole with the solar lantern down with a Sawzall.
There is absolutely nothing cookie cutter about my home. Its one of a kind! I'm focused on incorporating unexpected elements inside and out. I've curated unique elements to add functionality, character and uniqueness to the property. I have a long ways to go, but I'm truly enjoying the process.
